Disability and Employment Issues

By Lewis Stratton Disability - The Red Flag! Disability - What Do We Mean? The term disability is widely, and loosely used, to cover a range of functional impairments, injuries or loss of function. Some disabilities (such as short-sightedness) are quite socially acceptable and provide no barriers to social interaction, services or employment. Other disabilities, such as mild hearing loss, are not apparent to others and can be managed with a minimum of difficulty. Unfortunately the word disability suggests high dependence and a lack of competence in the minds of some. Underlying prejudice often focuses on the difference, rather than the abilities and capacities of those affected by a disability. Employers reflect the range of beliefs and prejudices evident in the wider community. When it comes to accessing services and work opportunities, perceptions about disability are as important as the disability itself. Legislative Issues Legislation in many jurisdictions seeks to prevent direct or indirect discrimination on the basis of disability, often with reference to a range of prescribed disabilities. For example, Australia has a range of Commonwealth and State legislation that addresses discrimination on the basis of disability. Some of this legislation is framed as Equal Opportunity (EO) legislation which identifies many kinds of discrimination, whilst other legislation is very specific to disability (e.g. Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992). The Disability Discrimination Act requires employers to make reasonable adjustments for people with a disability, who in all other respects are competent and qualified to undertake the work. The definition of reasonable adjustments is somewhat unclear, but the intention is very clear that employers are required to recruit candidates on merit. Such legislation provides a framework for the individual to assert their right to access services and employment, although the practicalities of asserting these rights can make it a major challenge. Disability and the Workplace Increasingly, organisations are recognising a social and moral responsibility to remove discriminatory practices with regard to a number of issues. This is true of disability. There is a growing recognition that a healthy work place is one that encompasses diversity and capitalises on the ability of staff. Many organisations, and the people in them, are committed to removing discriminatory practices. It is more common to see themes such as Celebrating Difference or Managing Diversity being promoted within organisations. For people living with a disability these are encouraging signs that the door may not always be politely, but firmly slammed in their faces. The Candidate’s Dilemma You have identified a position of interest and intend to apply. When should you let the employer know of your disability? The first question to ask is whether you have the competence and qualifications to undertake the work. This is the starting point for any candidate. The main, and legitimate interest of an employer is whether a candidate has the capacity to undertake the role successfully. Typically, your next task is to prepare your application, consisting of your Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) accompanied by the covering letter, and in many instances specific responses to the selection criteria provided by the employer. Your application package may not be the best way to share information about any specific disability. Its purpose is to highlight what you can do, without seeding doubts about competence. Obviously it is important that any assertions you make about your abilities and experience are honest and can be supported by evidence. It is likely you will need to discuss your disability related needs if selected for interview. This could be in the context of having access to, or bringing in specific equipment, physical access requirements or the format of the interview itself. An open discussion with the employer is appropriate here, but remember to emphasise what you can bring to the organisation. Make it clear that the issue of disability is a secondary consideration. At this stage you have already gained the advantage of having been assessed at a preliminary level as a potential candidate on the basis of your merits. The employer will no doubt be interested at this stage in what reasonable adjustments will need to be made in an ongoing way if you were the successful candidate. If these adjustments really are low level in nature, take the opportunity to have the conversation at this point. Otherwise, you might choose to respond with a statement such as Im really pleased to have this opportunity to attend an interview. Id be happy to have a more detailed discussion about my specific needs at interview. Interviews are often conducted by a panel rather than an individual, and this approach allows you to have direct access to all those involved in making the selection decision. The interview will also give the employer or selection panel the chance to meet you and deal with you as a person, rather than as a name on paper. Managing Selection Outcomes If selected for the position, WELL DONE! If not, seek feedback as to: - the reasons you were not selected, and - what you might do to address any professional deficits dentified in the selection process. Ideally, feedback should be freely available to any candidate. You may feel that the feedback provides adequate and appropriate explanation about the selection decision and use the feedback to strengthen your career planning strategies. However, feedback may strongly suggest to you that your disability has unfairly influenced the outcome. You may have recourse to lodging a grievance with the organisation itself (e.g. with Human Resources) or externally (an EO Commission or other authority with delegation to arbitrate in these matters). There is a natural reluctance to stir the pot and perhaps suffer further exclusion as a result. However, it might be more useful to operate on the basis that you have nothing to lose by confronting unfair decisions, and hold organisations accountable for inappropriate decisions. If there is a Commission or relevant authority in your jurisdiction, a confidential chat with an adviser may be helpful in determining your course of action. Your Weight Loss Goals for 2007

By Steven Johnson Everyone is different. There is no ideal weight that suits everybody. Each person has a different body and their healthy weight will be determined by different factors. Unfortunately, the affects of being too heavy can (and does) impact our “social status” in the world around us. Right or wrong, overweight individuals tend to suffer more not only in the health department, but at work and at play. Nowadays, there is more pressure than ever to lose weight. While a majority of us can admit to the fact that yes, it is better to feel good (and hence look “better”), there is no getting away from the TV commercials and written ads that do more than hint at the fact that if you are at your ideal weight you earn more respect and/or can have more friends. Frankly, there is no end to the come-ons we hear to be slim and trim, to lose weight. While we are bombarded with weight loss ads, there is one vital factor associated with maintaining a healthy weight that is true. By reaching the proper weight for oneself, the individual more often than not has more energy and overall better health. No one can deny that carrying excessive amounts of body fat puts undue pressure on various vital organs. Our hearts must work harder. All human body organs are put under undue stress due to excessive weight. We have all witnessed at one time or another the sacrifices of other people (or ourselves!) who have tried to eat the right foods and find time to exercise. Some individuals carry this to an extreme where they will even starve themselves or binge and purge. All for the sake of trying to lose a few pounds. Again, unfortunately, these individuals are not achieving optimum health but instead putting their very lives in jeopardy. And, even if one manages to lose weight typically that weight loss comes right back. A depressing scenario. So what can an individual do to achieve weight loss when watching our caloric intact and getting some exercise just does not seem to be enough? Mother nature may have the answer. There has been a huge influx of different types of herbal weight loss products. These herbal weight loss products have changed in the last century, but the pitches remain the same. Indeed, many herbs, supplements, and diet pills promise results that would put even the most efficient tape worms to shame. Of course it’s no secret that many of these products are fraudulent. But is it possible that a few of them really can live up to their claims? It is interesting to note that a few of the weight loss products on the market today do have the backing and support of pharmaceutical companies. Is it because weight loss products are “big business” or because they work? The jury is still out. But the fact remains that better health can be achieved through proper weight loss. If you are overweight, making that resolution to achieve better health will be the finest gift you can give yourself. Find the proper combination of natural nutrition, and exercise, and include herbal weight loss supplements best suited to your individual needs. A healthy new you and New Year is right around the corner! ================================ Steven Johnson is a proponent of healthy living. Ways In Which You Can Burn Body Fat Fast

By Dr. Kang-pang Chan In order to burn body fat fast you need to speed up your metabolism, do some exercise as well as making sure that you are eating the right sorts of foods. Below are some ways which burns fat fast. 1. High Fiber Foods Increase your intake of these sorts of foods as it aids the fat burning process significantly. It also promotes overall general health. A great way of getting such fiber is through eating salads which contain leafy greens in them. 2. Moderation It is vital that you do not eat too much or too little. So make sure that your meal times are always at a stage before you start to feel hungry. By following such a simple rule you will keep your metabolism intact and will end up burning off the fat, plus you will eat less as well. 3. Muscle Mass Do whatever it takes to build this up as it will help to burn off the fat. As we all know the muscles are much more active metabolically than fat or other tissue is. So the more lean muscle mass that you have the more calories and fat your body will burn even when you are resting. A good way of building up muscle mass it to do some resistance training each day, which will add more muscle which will in turn increase your metabolism and help to burn off the fat. 4. Avoid carbohydrates at bedtime Avoid any form of poor quality carbohydrate which contains sugar or highly processed foods such as cereals, breads, snack foods, sweets and even fruit and juices. By eating these before you go to bed you will increase the fat deposits and this will stop your body from maintaining a sufficiently high fat burning mode. So if you need to eat before going to bed then eat vegetables instead. 5. Increased cardio training This can easily be achieved by splitting your cardio training session into 2 small sessions rather than one long one. Research carried out has shown that those who do 30 minutes in the morning and another 30 minutes in the evening lose more fat than those who just do a 60 minute session each day. 6. Eat More Protein Food To make things simple to understand, protein and fat are two counterparts that need to be appropriately addressed with regards to the concern of losing weight and getting fit. The more muscle one has, the less likely one is to pack on fatty tissue on the body. By the same token, the more fat one is, the more difficult one is to be able to gain muscle. This is so simple to understand that it goes without saying that when one eats more good solid protein foods, one is more than likely to gain muscle rather than fat - of course, with exercises included. Therefore, in order to burn fat faster, one only has to make sure that more muscle is built and then the fat content of the body will begin to melt away silently! So by following the points just how simple it is to burns fat fast and you will like the results that you see. Venture Capital Firms

By Damian Sofsian While the terms and conditions of venture capital are not standardized, there are some salient features of venture capital arrangements. The venture capital firm is inclined to assume a high degree of risk in the expectation of earning a high rate of return. The venture capital firm, in addition to providing funds, takes an active interest in guiding the assisted firm. The financial burden for the assisted firm tends to be negligible in the first few years. The venture capital firm normally plans to liquidate its investment in the assisted firm after 3 to 5 years. Typically, the promoter of the assisted firm is given the first option to acquire the equity investment held by the venture capital firm. Venture capital firms can raise funds from different sources. The important long-term sources of finance are issue of equity shares and preference shares, issue of debentures of different types, raising of term loans from financial institutions and generation of reserves. Venture capital firms may use different combinations of these sources by considering their relative cost and availability and their impact on the value of the firm. Accordingly, a company can have patterns of capital structure such as equity shares only, equity shares and preference shares, equity shares and debentures, equity shares and preference shares reserves, equity shares and preference shares debentures, equity shares and preference shares/debentures reserves. The capital structure of venture capital firms is influenced by number of factors such as trading on equity, growth and stability of sales. Trading on equity means the use of long-term, fixed interest bearing sources of finance along with equity capital. Adopting trading on equity can increase the return on equity. However, this is possible only when the return on investment is more than the cost of finance. Venture Capital provides detailed information on Venture Capital, Venture Capital Firms, Venture Capital Investing, Venture Capital Funds and more. Update Your Wardrobe By Sewing Some Basics With Fashion Trends

By Marian Lewis Nothing is really new! It is just recycled! Everything old is new again! Add just one thing when you sew your 6 basic, classic garments and you will be in style this Spring 2006. What is this big fashion trend? It’s bows! Bows are back in the fashion world of 2006. They are on everything, everywhere. There are flat bows and fluffy bows, wide bows and narrow bows and everything in between bows. At the fashion shows, bows and sashes adorned every conceivable place on a garment - top, bottom, front and back. Just when we thought we would finally get rid of our bow blouses, they are back in style. Along with bows you will see pleats and tucks, the 60’s look, empire waists, A-line shifts and lots of ruffles and florals. Look for ladies short sleeve shirts with small matching neckties. Remember those? And how about “safari” looks as well? Although not very many females can wear them well, wide belts are back on the scene. Remember the ones with the big medallion in the middle? They are back! It looks like a more romantic, feminine look is in for 2006. Ugh! That means a more defined waistline to show off hour glass figures. Whatever happened to hour glass figures? Better get going with a new diet and exercise plan fast! Silky and chiffon fabrics are trendy especially in those ruffly and bow blouses. They look smart with the more fitted tailored jackets and coats including the classic trench coat. And for skirts, it is the pencil skirt. Everyone needs a good straight skirt. Get that fit right once and for all! Black is still big, but in more textured fabrics. Bright red and cream are a popular color combination as well as muted blues and grays like gray and dark denim. Dig out your platform shoes and cowboy boots. Add some lace and ball fringe to a few things and you have some of the latest trends for the new year. As for pants, it looks like slightly flared knee length cuffed shorts will be big. They are longer than Bermudas, but shorter than Capris. Be careful if this is not your best length or look. Make your pants the length that is most flattering for your figure. Stitch up a pair of khaki pants and a red top for yourself. And, don’t forget the bows! How about a flat bow at the neckline? That will do it! Get your fit in the 6 basic pieces every woman needs: 1. Jacket 2. Skirt 3. Pants 4. White Blouse/Shirt 5. Basic Black Dress 6. Basic Shell Focus on these basic, classic, sewing patterns until you are happy with the results. Sew them over and over in different fabrics and colors that look good on you. Accessorize to suit your style and you are all set no matter what the fashion trends are. The Meeting Planner’s Online Advantage: 6 Ways to Reduce 55% of Your Daily Workload

By Bill Flagg Here are 6 things you can accomplish TODAY by switching to a fully-automated registration system: Stop shuffling data. If you use Excel spreadsheets and/or Access databases to organize your data, then you have the ongoing task of transferring and compiling data to get the totals you need for your event. Eliminate these ongoing hassles by using a computerized system that automatically compiles and tallies all of your data for you… in real-time. Eliminate manual follow-ups. When someone registers using paper or a web form, your manual work has just begun… printing, copying, folding, mailing, emailing, rinse & repeat. Eliminate these time-consuming activities by using online registration. The fully-automated system will email everyone right when they register with their receipt, invoice and event materials. Process payments and credit cards automatically. Accepting credit card payments but manually processing them exposes you to entry errors - or worse, a declined card. Or you can just accept checks taking longer to collect money. Eliminate these extra steps by having your system accept and process credit card and check payments for you … the moment someone registers. Provide a self-service option. Registrants will inevitably need to make changes. Avoid an influx of calls and email requests that interrupt your work day. Give your registrants the power of self-service with an automated system, which allows them to make their own changes in real-time. End wait-list management. Limited space or popular events that sell-out quickly can become a burden to coordinate when you start receiving cancellations and wait-list requests. Take this task off your “to-do list” - accept waitlist requests online, and automatically notify your waitlisted registrants when space becomes available. Make data entry obsolete. If you are using paper registrations or web forms that get emailed to you, then you have data entry or transfer hassles… a time consuming process that leaves you struggling with illegible handwriting and correcting wrong information. Eliminate these hassles by using an automated system, which collects and organizes registrant data online. A fully-automated, online registration system eliminates 55% of meeting planners registration hassles and workload. I sincerely hope this article makes your conference and event registration even more successful! Bill Flagg is the President of RegOnline Putting smiles on the faces of over 9,200 event-planning professionals worldwide because it is the easiest-to-use online event and conference registration system available. Orange County Wedding Consultant: Services Provided

By Eric Patterson Consultants are defined as individuals who have knowledge or experience in a particular field. Consultants can be found all across the United States. Many specialize in a number of popular subjects, including weddings. If you are planning on getting married in the future, you may want to consider using the services of an Orange County wedding consultant. As previously mentioned, wedding consultants are individuals who have knowledge or experience in a certain field. Wedding consultants are most commonly experienced in the planning of a wedding. Sometimes, wedding consultants are often compared to wedding planners. While they may seem like the same thing, they are not always. Many wedding consultants provide information and insight into planning a wedding. If you are in need of advice on how to budget a wedding or what services you need to obtain, it is likely that an Orange County wedding consultant can offer you assistance. Wedding consultants are ideal for individuals who wish to have an elegant wedding, but cannot afford the services of a professional wedding planner. With the help of a wedding consultant, you may be able to plan and prepare for your own wedding. While most wedding consultants only provide information and insight into the planning of a wedding, many offer additional services. In your search for an Orange County wedding consultant, you may find an individual who not only offers advice, but will help you plan your wedding as well. Many times these individuals offer duel services. They tend to act as a wedding planner, as well as a wedding consultant. When using the services of a wedding consultant, you will be provided with professional advice. It is important to remember that most professional advice does not come free. When using the services of a professional wedding consultant, you may have to pay a fee. The type of fee you will be charged will all depend on who you are working with. Some wedding consultants charge a set fee, while others only charge for each scheduled appointment. If you are interested in using the services of a professional Orange County wedding consultant, you will have to find an individual to do business with. Your local phone book and the internet are both great resources when planning a wedding. By looking in the business directory of your phone book or by performing a standard internet search, you should be able to acquire the contact information of a number of professional consultants. When planning your wedding, it is important to remember that you do not have to have a professional wedding consultant. Many couples have planned their own weddings without one, but many have also used one. An Orange County wedding consultant could provide you with information and other valuable wedding planning tips that you were previously unaware of. Even though you need to pay for the services of a professional wedding consultant, you may end up saving more money in the long run. How To Make A Candy Bouquet

By Peta Fletcher A bouquet is usually made just from flowers, but that doesn’t have to be the case. You can make your bouquet more interesting by adding other items, such as candy. Yeah, you read correctly, I said, Candy! Candy Bouquets are fun to make, look great, and they are a fantastic talking piece. I promise that everyone that sees your candy bouquet will feel compelled to comment on it. Young children in particular, will be absolutely delighted when they see your candy bouquet! To make a candy bouquet, you will need: 5 Silk Rose Buds 1 Bunch of pearlies 2 Thin Gauge wires 1 Thick Gauge wire 9 Lollipops. Silk Leaves Stem tape (green or white) Ribbon Step 1: Trimming the lollipops Trim the lollipop sticks to about an inch or two in length, or just below the wrapper. Later, we will wire and tape the sticks just like normal flowers. We do this so that the lollipops can be moved around and positioned more easily. Step 2: Trimming the Rose Buds Trim the stems on the rose bud heads, and then wire and tape them. Step 3: Wire the lollipops To wire the lollipops you will have to put a twist in the wire around the stick of the lollipop. You will probably have to do this twice, to make sure that the wire is tight and wont come loose. The easiest way to do this is to use long-nosed plyers, and to squeeze the wire around the stick. Step 4: Wire and Tape the Pearlies Although you don’t need pearlies in your candy bouquet, they can work well to soften the bouquet, and make it appear more like an everyday floral bouquet. Wire and tape the pearlies. Place the wire alongside the white part of the pearly strand, and then stem tape in place. Step 5: Assemble the Candy Bouquet Now start to assemble the candy bouquet. Start the bouquet with the lollipops in a bunch, in one hand. Then slowly insert the leaves between the lollipops. Fan the lollipops into a circular shape, with the leaves facing out. Place the flowers in next, keeping two lollipops between each flower. Fill any gaps left over at the end, with leaves and pearlies. Step 6: Add Figure-of-Eight Bows Make eight figure-of-eight bows, for the last layer of the candy bouquet, and fan them around the base. You can use normal ribbons or curling ribon. Step 7: Prepare the handle The last step in making a candy bouquet is to trim and tape the handle. That’s it! Simple isn’t it? All you have to do now, is resist eating the bouquet long enough for some other people to see it! Peta Fletcher has been making bouquets for over 14 years. Fishing Lures And Flies

By Sandra Cundy Fishing lures and flies are manufactured to be so configured that they appear enticing, even irresistible to fish. They are made using sparkles and feathers and are constructed with all manner of bright, shiny materials. The idea behind their manufacture is to fool the fish into thinking that the lure or the fly is a delicious, succulent bug, or whatever tidbit that the desired species of fish eats. Many times a fishing lure or a fly is a beautiful work of art that is comparable to fine jewelry and worthy of being worn as such. One particular line of custom, hand crafted lures and flies is perhaps the top of the line, the crme de la crme of fishing lures and flies. Each piece is painstakingly constructed and expertly tied to produce not only a sturdy, functional piece of tackle, but also to provide a creation that is lovely to look at. If you want to use them for fishing, they are wonderfully functional and if you want to display them or use them for jewelry, they will make excellent pieces to add to your collections. These custom lures and flies are made with precious metals like gold and silver and are adorned with stones and gems like diamonds and jades, and their price reflects the value of the materials that go into manufacturing them. These custom lures and flies are not for the weekend fisherman, but for the true fishing aficionado, the water warrior whose credo combines the spirit of the marines and the determination of the postal service. These lures and flies are well worth the price one has to pay for them. Imagine standing in the middle of a fresh water stream, with the water rushing, the birds singing and the sun shinning. Think of a big, juicy rainbow trout, grilled on an open fire and laying on your dinner plate. Now get your first cast ready and let it go, floating on the air like a graceful butterfly. It falls to the water and immediately a rainbow trout grabs it. Its that simple. The only question is, Which one do you want the most? http://www.my-grammys-attic.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Sandra_Cundy http://EzineArticles.com/?Fishing-Lures-And-Flies&id=493586 no checking account payday loans har money loans wachovia sba loans who can help me pay off my payday loan

A Sweet 16 to Remember

By Gail Leino Celebrate a Sweet 16 in a different way with a splash of color. Start by figuring out the guest of honors favorite color. This will be the starting point to gathering what party supplies you will need. Lets say the chosen color theme is blue, which will mean using as much blue as possible. Start by sending out blue invitations. Use blue numbers of 1 and 6, blue shapes, or anything to fit blue at the party supply store. It might sound like a contradiction, but actually ask guests not to wear the chosen color. This seems silly, but will be clarified later. With your guest list covered, now its time to decorate. Pick a nice big room to set up in, possibly even outdoors if it is weather permitting. Cover your table with a blue tablecloth and set out vases with arrangements of blue flowers. If possible, mix as many shades of the color, in this case blue, as possible. Feel free to scatter flower petals as well. Get creative with wall or hanging decorations following the blue theme. Under the sea is all blue, as well as the sky or even ice. Use things like paper cut-outs of moons and stars. If youre in the aquatic type mood, perhaps dolphins and whales. Balloons come in many shades of blue, as do crepe paper. Your imagination is the only limit here. Your menu can also match your theme. In this case selections such as blueberry pie, blue moon ice cream and a blue frosted cake would find themselves right at home. Personal favorites should of course be worked into the program, and a drop of food coloring can let you do this without missing a beat. If you were still wondering why your guests should not follow the theme and wear blue, wait no more. By guests appearing in a rainbow of colors excluding only blue, it will make your theme even bolder. At the same time, it allows for balance and keeps things from looking like your party was simply hit by a can of blue paint. Mrs. Party… Gail Leino is the internet’s leading authority on selecting the best possible party supplies, using proper etiquette and manners while also teaching organizational skills and fun facts.
